The Best Way to Lose Weight

The best way to lose weight is simple: adopt a can-do attitude and never give up. Despite the abundance of fad diets promising easy weight loss, the real key to losing weight is the age-old equation of diet + exercise. To shed extra pounds and keep them off permanently, you must burn more calories than you consume. You must commit to an active lifestyle and healthy diet.

Physician-assisted weight loss programs, such as those offered by The Center for Medical Weight Loss, are based on this classic principle. However, they do it one better by customizing each program to the individual needs, preferences and abilities of each dieter – creating a personalized plan to take control of your weight and lose weight for good. Remember, the diets that work are not those that promise magical solutions and easy weight loss, but those that enable permanent weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. Learn how to lose weight effectively.

Using BMI to find your ideal weight

According to the Cleveland Clinic, BMI is part of some of the most popular diets. BMI, or the Body Mass Index calculator, is a mathematical formula to determine obesity based on a person’s height and weight.

The simple equation is the following:   (Your weight x 703) / Your height in inches squared = BMI

For example, a 5’5″ (65 inches) woman who weighs 180 pounds has a BMI of (180 x 703)/65 squared, or 29.95.

A BMI from 18.5 to 25 is considered a healthy weight, while a BMI over 30 indicates that an individual is at risk for obesity-related health problems. A BMI over 40 is considered morbidly obese.

Determine your daily recommended calories

The Cleveland Clinic also states that reducing calorie consumption while upping your activity level is the best way to lose weight without subscribing to bogus fad diets. First, determine your activity level: Low (no regular physical activity), Moderate (30-60 minutes of aerobic activity 3+ times a week), or High (60+ minutes of aerobic activity 4+ times each week). Then follow this chart:

Low Activity Moderate Activity High Activity
Underweight 16 18 22
Normal weight 14 16 18
Overweight 11 14 16
Adapted from Esvelt B and DeHoog S: Clinical Nutrition, Volume I. Enteral and Tube Feeding. W.B. Saunders, 1984

To determine the daily calories required to maintain your weight, multiply your corresponding number by your weight. To lose ½ pound per week, you must cut 250 daily calories; to lose a pound each week, you must reduce you daily consumption by 500 calories. For example, the 180-pound woman above is considered overweight. If she is moderately active (14), she needs 2,520 daily calories to maintain her weight. To lose a pound per week, she will have to reduce her calorie consumption to 2,020 daily calories, or increase her physical activity level to burn those extra calories, learn about 20 easy ways to burn calories.

The best way to lose weight is through a healthy lifestyle

Dr. Kaplan, founder of the Center for Medical Weight Loss, concurs with the Cleveland Clinic and the general principles of weight loss. However, through experience Dr. Kaplan is also aware that the simple solution of reduced calories and increased exercise is not always so simple. Identifying the best diets or sustainable exercise plans can be challenging, and dieting with few results is disheartening. That’s why Dr. Kaplan developed the physician-assisted weight loss programs through the Center for Medical Weight Loss and why he his program has become the foundation of so many weight loss success stories. The Center customizes each plan to a dieter’s individual needs and lifestyle. For example, it is counter-productive to prescribe 5 weekly gym hours to a person who hates going to the gym. Instead, Center for Medical Weight Loss physicians will work to build a program that involves enjoyable activity, like a weekly ultimate Frisbee game or a brisk evening walk through the neighborhood with family. Because the best way to lose weight has always been, and will always remain, the method that is enjoyable enough to maintain for the rest of your life.
