Advantages of the High Protein Diet

High protein diets shift the body into fat-burning mode, help dieters feel fuller for longer, and offer a simple way to reduce calories without going hungry. Unlike common fad diets, a high protein menu doesn’t  require any supplements or expensive equipment.  All that is required is a desire to eat healthy, delicious food and maintain daily activity.

The structure of a high protein diet

A high protein diet is defined as a diet comprised of 30% to 50% lean proteins, with other caloric needs divided between healthy fats and wholesome carbohydrates. Recommended protein sources may include skinless chicken, lean beef, fish, pork, and reduced-fat dairy products like milk and yogurt. For sources of healthy fats, look to olive oil, nuts, and avocado. Whole grains and other good carbs, including sweet potatoes and brown rice, are an excellent source of additional energy.

Studies of high-protein diets

Several studies reveal that a high-protein diet can aid weight loss and boost fat-burning. For example, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that showed that dieters who followed a diet of 20% fat, 30% protein and 50% carbs consumed 441 fewer daily calories. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition revealed that the combination of exercise and a high-protein diet helped boost fat-burning and enhanced weight-loss. Researchers opined that a high-protein diet might help reduce appetite and give dieters greater control over their caloric intake.

Benefits of a protein diet

Healthy diets and regular exercise comprise the best ways to lose weight. A protein diet is naturally healthy – it dictates a nutritious blend of proteins, healthy fats, and good carbohydrates – and recommends an active lifestyle. Additionally, a high protein diet may reduce blood fats, helping maintain healthy tissue and muscles while using up the body’s fat stores for fuel. For many, protein also helps them feel fuller, longer, helping curve unhealthy cravings or rampant snacking.

Additionally, HCG dieters are required to ply their bodies with sprays, drops, pills and injections, none of which is recommended by the FDA or substantiated by scientific evidence. In fact, a peddler of the HCG diet was fined $37 million in 2007 for what the Federal Trade Commission defined as misleading and false claims.

In contrast, a protein-rich diet is naturally healthy. It provides for well-rounded nutrition, including lean proteins, nature-sourced fats, and whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Scientific evidence shows that it turns the body into a fat-burning machine. Even better, the high protein diet is ideally suited to physician-assisted eating plans. Healthcare professionals help protein dieters establish weight loss goals, and may also monitor nutrition levels. After six months, a nutritionist physician can recommend other healthy diets that work and will aid in long-term goals and weight maintenance, once you have reached goal weight.
