Top 10 Fad Diets of 2012

Ava Lawson | March 1st, 2013

Fad DietsIn our constant quest for the best way to lose weight, we’ll try just about any program or pill that promises quick results. Media personality and registered dietitian Keri Gans recently reviewed the most popular diets of 2012. In the U.S. News article, Gans outlined Google’s top trending diets, giving her expert take on the pros and cons of each. Here’s what she had to report:

Top 10 fad diets of 2012

1. Michael Phelps Diet

  • Pros: Michael Phelps can apparently consume up to 12,000 calories each day without dietary restrictions and still keep in tip-top shape – at least for the time being.
  • Cons: Even if you’re a super athlete, you should never consider this caloric overload, let alone any program that condones huge quantities of refined sugar or fat.

2. Beyond Diet

  • Pros: A gluten-free plan that focuses on nutritious foods like raw nuts, eggs, fresh fruits and veggies and lean proteins with an emphasis on natural, unprocessed foods. Has online support and tons of recipes.
  • Cons: Going completely gluten-free may not be for everyone, as medical experts feel that such an extreme diet is better for those who have celiac disease or some type of gluten intolerance.

3. Raspberry Ketone Diet

  • Pros: The world is now aware of the power of raspberries.
  • Cons: This may be another in a long line of fad diets, as there’s a lot of media hype and very little evidence that supports the raspberry ketone claims. Ditch the diet and spend your hard-earned cash on the real fruit instead.

4. P.I.N.K. Method Diet

  • Pros: An acronym for power, intensity, nutrition, and “kardio,” this trending diet was recently featured on Dr. Phil. The plan requires strenuous cardio workouts and lots of high-fiber foods.
  • Cons: Some of the phases of this diet are dangerously scarce in calories and perhaps too restrictive when considering the rigorous exercise regimen.

5. Adriana Lima Diet

  • Pros: Based on the Victoria Secret Angel’s pre-fashion show strategies, this diet emphasizes vegetables, exercise and staying hydrated.
  • Cons: Unless you’re a fan of a mostly liquid diet with lots of protein shakes, this plan may not be for you. It’s too restrictive in calories and low in dietary fat and carbs. Be wary!

6. Miranda Kerr Diet

  • Pros: On this diet by yet another Victoria’s Secret model, you’ll be limiting sugary snacks and drinking lots of water.
  • Cons: While a balanced diet, Kerr is a proponent of eating for your specific blood type, and there is no evidence to support this actually works.

7. NV Diet Pill

  • Pros: Absolutely none.
  • Cons: With the likes of Holly Madison and Carmen Elektra as celebrity endorsements, do you really think this is the best way to lose weight? This diet pill is another quick-fix gimmick, and can join the ranks of other fad diets.

8. Feeding Tube diet

  • Pros: Made famous by brides to be, this plan made other ridiculous fad diets seem normal.
  • Cons: Live on 800 calories a day, thanks to a feeding tube. Enough said.

9. Juicing Diet

  • Pros: A periodic juicing with healthy fruits and veggies can benefit anyone.
  • Cons: Irritability, headaches, and chronic fatigue are associated with long-term juicing, which may not meet your daily nutritional requirements.

10. Marisa Miller Diet

  • Pros: Follow this model’s diet and you’ll be practicing portion control and swapping out fattening treats for organic foods.
  • Cons: Very few, but the exercise component may be challenging to stick with for the average girl, as Marisa Miller has a regular personal trainer – a luxury few people can afford.
