Scarsdale Diet Review

Figuring out the best way to lose weight quickly can be difficult. Some people claim to have successfully shed unwanted pounds in a short amount of time by following the immensely popular Scarsdale Diet. The low-fat, high protein diet was developed by cardiologist Herman Tarnowner. Initially, Dr. Tarnowner only shared the diet with his patients. He eventually wrote a book about the diet so that others could reap the health benefits of the weight loss plan as well.

Scarsdale diet: low-calorie meals

The diet consists of a two phases known as the Scarsdale Medical Diet and the Keep Trim Phase. The Scarsdale Medical Diet is followed for two weeks, with the Keep Trim Phase lasting for another two weeks. Strict adherence to the diet can supposedly result in weight loss of up to 20 pounds within 14 days.

During the first two weeks, you will eat three meals a day that each consist of 43% protein, 22.5% fat and 34.5% carbohydrates. You can eat lean meats, vegetables and salads, but rich dressings, butter, mayonnaise or other fatty condiments cannot be added. You are not allowed to eat any snacks other than celery and carrots in between meals. You are also urged not to consume alcoholic beverages. Water, coffee, tea, sugar free drinks and diet soda are the types of drinks you can have during meals and throughout the day. On average, you will only consume about 700 – 1000 calories per day.

During the Keep Trim Phase, you are taking a two-week break from the diet. You can eat a larger variety of foods and consume slightly more than 1000 calories per day. You should continue to carefully monitor what you eat in order to ensure that you keep losing weight during this period of time. The two-week break prevents the body from getting used to the strict diet regimen and helps to optimize the weight loss results.

Negative aspects of the diet plan

Even though the diet has proven to be effective at helping people lose weight, it is still considered controversial. Exercise is not included as part of the diet plan. People may feel fatigue and not have enough energy to exercise due to the low amount of calories they are consuming. The daily calorie intake for the diet is about half of the daily calorie intake recommended for many adults. The highly regimented nature of the diet also makes it difficult for people to stick to the meal plan for an extended period of time.
