The HCG diet menu and food list provides a strict outline for a dieter’s daily food regimen. For optimal hCG diet results, Dr. Simeons, the creator of the plan, details a meal plan that exceeds no more than 500 daily calories – an amount that most physicians and healthcare professionals deem unhealthy. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed hCG diet products to be illegal, and calls the diet a “reckless” fad that can be very dangerous to dieters.

The hCG Diet Menu

Dr. Simeons’ original hCG diet calls for a very low calorie diet (VLCD) of 500 calories maximum per day. Breakfast is relegated to unlimited quantities of unsweetened coffee or tea; only one tablespoon of milk is permitted in a 24-hour period. Lunch and dinner consist of four elements: 100 grams of lean protein, one approved vegetable, one breadstick or Melba toast, and one approved fruit. The approved hCG food list is the following:

  • Lean protein: Beef, veal chicken breast, white fish, lobster, crab, or shrimp; all visible fat must be trimmed off before cooking.
  •  Vegetables: Spinach, asparagus, chard, cabbage, chicory, red radishes, beet-greens, tomatoes, celery, fennel, onions, cucumbers, and green salad.
  •  Fruits: One apple, a handful of strawberries, one orange, or half a grapefruit.

Salt, pepper and other spices are permitted, but dieters cannot use oils, butter or dressings. Personal beauty products are also limited, and lotions with oil are not permitted. No exercise is required. Daily hCG injections of 125 iu are administered for a period of no more than 40 days.

Kevin Trudeau’s hCG Diet Protocol

In 2007, Kevin Trudeau released his version of the hCG diet, which quickly rocketed to popularity – before FDA regulations and a successful Federal Trade Commission (FTC) lawsuit against Trudeau raised public skepticism. Trudeau’s hCG diet protocol details four phases:

  • Phase 1: This phase lasts 30 days and has several recommendations. Daily hCG injections are required to cleanse the body, and dieters are asked to walk for at least one hour every day and increase their intake of water. Additional suggestions include taking raw organic apple cider vinegar, wearing an electromagnetic chaos eliminator, and relieving anxiety with AlphaCalm supplments.
  • Phase 2: After a three-day gorge, dieters are regulated to an updated version of Dr. Simeons’s aforementioned 500-calorie daily diet and hCG food list. This phase lasts from 26 to 43 total days, during which hCG injections/supplements are required.
  • Phase 3: This phase lasts three weeks and increases menu choices to healthy foods – no fast food, sugar, trans fats or artificial sweeteners allowed.
  • Phase 4: This is the maintenance phase.

FDA Calls hCG Diet Dangerous and Illegal

According to the FDA, a 500-calorie diet is both unhealthy and hazardous to your health. Furthermore, hCG is a human hormone that is regulated by law and can only be administered through a doctor’s prescription. Brad Pace of the FDA explains, “You cannot sell products claiming to contain hCG as an OTC drug product. It’s illegal.”

Dr. Simeons’s diet faded in the 1970s, after it became clear that there was no proof that hCG aided in weight loss. In August 2008, Kevin Trudeau was fined $37 million for deceptive and fraudulent claims relating to the hCG diet.
