Natural weight loss products promise big results to those hoping to shed pounds. But how effective are they at producing results?

Successful weight loss programs should utilize safe methods to achieve positive results. Many of the natural weight loss products — including the HCG diet plan — may not live up to their hype. People looking to lose weight fast first want to separate the fact from fiction.

Natural Weight Loss Methods

There are many so-called natural weight loss methods on the market today, each promising a myriad of benefits. Some of the most common weight loss ingredients include:

  •  Bitter Orange: This highly touted fat burner is used for weight loss supplements, because of the herb’s ability to rev up the metabolism so the body can burn fat more effectively. However, stimulants in bitter orange may pose a health risk for some users.
  •  Capsaicin: The compound found in hot peppers may slightly boost the metabolism, but results from this fat burner alone are not sufficient. Doctors may use capsaicin supplements in combination with a diet and exercise program to achieve best results.
  •  CLA: Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a substance that has been found to cut body fat in mice. However, those results do not translate to humans, leaving most doctors questioning its effectiveness.
  •  DHEA: Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone made by the human body that is thought to increase energy and promote lean muscle production, but the jury is still out on whether it is truly effective.

The HCG Diet Plan

The HCG diet plan claims to use a substance created by the human body to aid in weight loss efforts. In addition to supplements, the HCG diet plan recommends a daily diet of just 500 calories. In December, 2011, the FDA issued a warning, stating that over-the-counter products containing HCG have not been approved by the agency, which makes them illegal.

In addition, Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, told USA Today, “It’s reckless, irresponsible and completely irrational. Can you lose weight on it? Of course, but that’s mainly because you are consuming hardly any calories.”

Physicians and natural weight loss

One of the most effective ways to shed pounds quickly — and safely — can with the help of a doctor.  Physician-directed programs that combine diet and exercise are gaining widespread popularity among dieters seeking a more natural alternative to fads like HCG. Physicians can also provide the best information about natural weight loss products, and offer advice about which ones, if any, will be right for you.

One such program, The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) offers customized weight loss plans to meet a patient’s specific needs. The average patient loses 11.1 percent of total body weight within 12 weeks.  CMWL founder Dr. Michael Kaplan developed the program based on the theory that diet and exercise offer more effective and long-term weight loss solutions than fad diet trends.

Currently, the Center operates 450 centers nationwide to help patients achieve their weight loss goals. To find out if there is a center in your area, enter your zip code in the search box above.  First time callers should ask about special incentives and bonus offers available at many locations.
